Toronto's Drop-Off Depots charge a minimum $40 deposit per load in 2026, with rates that rose 3.75% on January 1, 2026. As of January 2026, depots also restricted recycling drop-off to commercial and charity accounts — so a regular resident hauling mixed recyclables may be turned away or charged. Budget $40–$120 in disposal for a full load, on top of your own time, fuel, and a vehicle big enough to carry it.
People assume dumping it yourself is free. It isn't. Toronto's depots take a per-load minimum deposit (~$40) and charge by weight above that. The January 2026 rate increase and the new commercial-only recycling rule make it more of a hassle for individuals than it used to be — you may need a registered commercial account to drop mixed loads, or you're routed to private transfer stations.
Then there's the part nobody counts: renting or borrowing a truck, loading it yourself (the heavy, awkward part), driving to the depot, unloading again, and the disposal fee itself. For a single small item it can be worth it. For a couch, a fridge, or anything from a basement, the math usually favours a flat-quote pickup where the disposal fee, the truck, and the labour are all one number.
