The waste rules genuinely differ across the GTA. Here's the plain-language version, and why it matters for getting rid of junk.

Toronto vs Markham vs Peel: why the junk rules are all different

One of the most confusing things about getting rid of junk in the GTA is that the rules genuinely change from city to city. What your friend in Etobicoke told you may not apply in Markham or Mississauga, because they're governed by different waste programs.

Three different systems

The City of Toronto covers Toronto, Scarborough, North York, and Etobicoke, with houses getting oversized curbside collection and condos excluded. Markham runs its own York Region program with different rules. Mississauga falls under Peel Region, with its own bulky-item rules again.

What it means for you

Always check your own municipality's collection calendar before assuming an item can go curbside, and remember that reno debris, appliances, and condos are handled privately almost everywhere. That's the gap we fill across all three.
