Old tires are banned from Ontario landfill, and there's a free take-back program worth knowing. Most tire retailers accept used passenger and light-truck tires for recycling at no charge under Ontario's tire stewardship program. For a large pile, or tires mixed into a bigger clear-out, a flat-rate pickup handles it.
The free option
Tire retailers accept used tires for recycling for free under Ontario's program. Four tires off a car? That's usually the cheapest route.
When pickup makes sense
A garage full of old tires, tires mixed into a basement or estate clear-out, or oversized tires retailers won't take.
Where they go
Recycled tires become crumb rubber for playground surfaces and tracks, which is why they're kept out of landfill.
