Before getting rid of an old water heater or furnace, check one thing: is it rented? Many GTA households rent their water heater from a utility provider, and if so you may owe a return rather than a disposal. If you own it, it's mostly steel and goes to scrap recycling.
Rented vs owned
If your water heater is on a rental contract, check the agreement before removing it, you may need to return it to stop the monthly charge. If you own it, it's yours to dispose of.
Drain it first
Old tanks are heavy and often partly full. Drain it before removal day so it's manageable.
Where it goes
Water heaters and furnaces are largely steel and go to scrap recycling. Removal is a flat $179 for a single unit.
