Downsizing a home you've been in for decades isn't a junk job, it's a hundred small decisions, most not really about the furniture. A simple system keeps it moving: sort into keep, sell, donate, and toss, and handle them in that order.

Keep, sell, donate, toss

Start with keepsakes and documents, mark those first. Then decide what's worth selling, what a charity can use, and what's genuinely done. Four piles is enough.

Don't donate junk

Charities pay to dispose of what they can't sell, so a broken dresser doesn't help them. If it's damaged, treat it as toss, not donate.

Bring in help for the last pile

When the tossing pile is a full basement or garage, a flat-rate crew clears it in a day, sets aside anything personal you missed, and donates the usable pieces.
