Not everything is donatable, and dropping a broken dresser at a charity just shifts your disposal cost onto them. Here's how to tell what to donate and what to dispose of.
Furniture in good, clean, complete condition can usually be donated, often with free pickup. Anything broken, stained, or infested needs disposal. Donate it if
- It is structurally sound, clean, and free of rips, stains, smoke, and pet damage.
- All the parts are there.
- You can wait for a pickup window. Call first, because every charity has different rules and most refuse used mattresses.
Dispose of it if
- It is broken, torn, water-damaged, or it smells.
- It is missing parts, or it is particleboard that will not survive a move.
- You are on a deadline and cannot wait for a charity's schedule.
The honest middle
Charities pay to dispose of what they cannot sell. Dropping off a broken dresser does not help them, it just transfers your disposal cost. If it is genuinely junk, treat it as junk.
