Donation vs dump: where your stuff actually goes

With a responsible junk removal company, a meaningful share of what you throw out doesn't go to landfill — usable furniture and household goods go to donation, metals and electronics to recycling, and only what's genuinely unusable is disposed. The catch is that not every company actually sorts; some landfill everything because it's faster. If diversion matters to you, ask directly how they sort and whether they donate — a company that does it will answer specifically.
"Junk" is a misleading word — a lot of what leaves a home is perfectly usable. Couches in good shape, working appliances, dressers, tables, household goods: charities and reuse programs take these, and a company that bothers to sort will route them to donation first. Metals, appliances and electronics go to recycling streams (fridges specifically need refrigerant handling). Only the true waste — broken, soiled, or non-recyclable — should hit the landfill.
The honest test of a junk company is whether they can tell you *specifically* how they sort. Vague answers usually mean everything goes to the dump because it's the path of least effort. A company that donates and recycles as standard will say so plainly, because it's both the right thing and a genuine selling point.
