In Toronto you can put a couch out for oversized/bulky item collection on your regular garbage day, but it comes with limits: items must be set out correctly, there are caps on how much they'll take at once, and some materials (mattresses, certain furniture with metal springs) have specific handling. If you've missed the window or you're over the limit, you're waiting until the next cycle — which is where a same-day flat-rate pickup beats it.
The city does collect bulky items like couches with regular garbage collection, as long as they're placed at the curb properly and you're within the set-out limits. It's the cheapest option if your timing lines up and you're only getting rid of one or two things.
Where it falls down: timing and volume. If you've just missed your collection day, that couch sits at the curb for a week (against bylaws in some areas, and an eyesore either way). If you're clearing more than the limit — a move-out, a basement — the city won't take it all at once. And you still have to wrestle the couch out of the house and to the curb yourself.
A flat-rate pickup solves the timing and the lifting: photo, flat quote, and it's gone — often same-day — carried out from wherever it's sitting. For a single item on a good collection week, use the city. For anything urgent, heavy, or over the limit, a pickup is worth it.
