The free option, and its rules
The City of Toronto collects oversized items like couches at the curb on your regular garbage day. The conditions that trip people up:
- It has to be a house on city collection, not a condo or apartment building.
- It must be at the curb by 7 a.m. on your collection day.
- It has to meet the city's size and quantity limits.
- You get it to the curb yourself, and you wait for your day.
Why condos are excluded
Condo and apartment buildings handle their own waste through property management, so the city's curbside furniture collection does not serve them. If you are in a tower, leaving a couch in the hallway or loading dock is a job for private removal, not the city.
When to just pay for pickup
The free route is great if you can get the couch out yourself, you are in a house, and you can wait for garbage day.
